Joe Jung: Music

Put One Foot Forward

Jessi was born in deep West Virginia
Where the hills sing a mighty song
Where the mountains tell tales of coal mines and whiskey
And the fiddles all cry til the dawn

She flew from that place with the grace of an angel
On the race for the brightest light
In a rusty old bar in Barrington county
She danced into my life

Singing, Put one foot forward tonight
Just give me your left hand and you take my right
And if you feel lonesome just set it aside
And put one foot forward tonight

Well we waltzed through the country we waltzed through the fields
We waltzed right down I-95
We waltzed all the way to New York City
And it's trying to eat us alive

But we found a fresh basket to hold an old flame
Which we pass back and forth with care
And if you look closely on a cold winter night
You'll see it bobbing down Washington Square

Saying put one foot forward tonight
Just give me your left hand and you take my right
And if you feel sorrow just set it aside
And put one foot forward tonight

Well I may not be much of a dancer
I may stumble all over my shoes
But if you'll oblige a clumsy false cowboy
I'll trip my silly life away with you

Singing put one foot forward tonight
I'll give you my left hand if you give me your right
And if you feel foolish just set it aside
And put one foot forward tonight
